Food Illustration for Kids

Eating and drawing are both one of the pleasures that most people enjoy. The inspiration came to Ong Lyn-Hui one day as they were looking at a menu in a Japanese restaurant. They noticed that most Asian kids usually do not take the initiative to browse through menus because they look classy and matured. So instead of showcasing food using photography, Lyn-Hui decided to create a series of food illustrations in a flashcard style to engage kids and help them learn about food and the names of their food more efficiently.

This series of food illustrations by Ong Lyn-Hui displays four different dishes in Japanese cuisine. The iconic sushi, sashimi, ocha, and udon are all beautifully illustrated with handwritten lettering. The illustrations were created using Adobe Photoshop, giving them a unique and vibrant look.

The illustrations are printed on textured card stock, measuring 100 mm x 150 mm. The choice of paper adds to the tactile experience and enhances the overall quality of the design.

Ong Lyn-Hui's design process involved background research, brainstorming, and sketching in traditional media. The final illustrations were digitally painted, and the paper selection was carefully considered to ensure the best presentation of the artwork. The finished art was then printed and made available for purchase.

This design was developed in March 2014 in Malaysia. During the design process, Ong Lyn-Hui conducted research on food illustration and color combinations that attract kids the most. The colors used in this series are quite saturated, as research suggests that color can affect a child's appetite. Complementary colors were chosen to appeal to kids, and the shapes and forms of the illustrated food are less realistic and more cartoony to create a playful and cheerful mood. Subtle grain and textures were added to enhance the overall visual appeal.

The intellectual property and copyrights for this design belong to Ong Lyn-Hui. The design has also received recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.
